FAQ

What is a source word?

The total price of a translation is calculated from the word count of the source text if we receive it in formatted electronic form. In the case of printed form or of electronic format that does not enable the word count to be established, the total price of the translation is established from the word count of the target text.

What is a standard page?

A standardised page, namely a so-called standard page (NS), is an 1,800-character text including spaces, which corresponds to 30 lines after 60 characters. The number is divided by 1,800 and the result is the number of standard pages.

What are CAT tools and what are their advantages?

CAT (Computer Assisted Translation) is an abbreviation of a computer-supported translation working with a terminological database. CAT tools do not replace a translator's work, they store a translated text in a so-called translation memory.

Advantages of using CAT tools:

  • preservation of a unitary terminology, even in the case of several translators
  • a marked acceleration of translation
  • lower translation costs, since repetitions are only translated once
  • possibility of the creation of a translation memory and of a terminological vocabulary
  • particularly suitable when translating texts containing repetitions and exact terms, or when localising web pages, for instance.

What is the meaning of the expressions "direct" and "indirect" translation?

A direct translation is an immediate translation from the source language into the target language. For example, the source text is Italian and a translation into Czech is required. The specialised Italian-Czech translator will translate documents directly into Czech.

An indirect translation is used in particular from or into less common languages, where it is not possible to obtain a translator to work directly with the particular language pair. A translation is first made from the source language into English and then from English into the target language.

Court-certified translations

A court-certified translation is a document for official use, for submission to authorities, the police, or courts both in the Czech Republic and abroad. The translation is attached to the original document and is accompanied by a certificate of the court-appointed translator (declaration by the translator of its authenticity), a circular stamp and the signature of the translator.

How fast will the translation be delivered?

The normal word count per translator is 2,000 - 2,500 words, i.e. 8-10 standard pages per working day. We will however endeavour to adapt the delivery promise to the customer's individual needs, so that in the case of a large translation or a very urgent one, we are able to form a special team of several translators coordinated by a project manager.

In what format is my order going to be delivered?

The translation will be delivered in whatever format the customer wants (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, etc.)

How will the order be delivered?

Translations are sent by the means specified by the customer (e-mail, fax, registered post or courier.

How does consecutive interpreting differ from simultaneous interpreting?

In the case of consecutive interpreting, the speaker speaks in short segments and leaves time for the interpreter to translate and only then continues to speak. This is the most frequent interpreting technique and is used mainly in the case of a small number of participants, as is the case for lectures, business negotiations, speeches and the like.

In the case of simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter translates as the speaker speaks. The interpreter translates what has just been said and must listen to what the speaker says next. This is the most demanding form of interpreting and it is desirable, therefore, to have at least two interpreters available. This form of interpreting is usually employed where a high number of participants is present, namely, in discussions, meetings, congresses and the like.
